"Ugly Plastic Frustration Machine that Needs $300 Grinder" 2009-04-17

Gaggia has a reputation for building relatively solid though finicky espresso makers. This machine is one of the new generation of Gaggias, which evidently are attempting to retreat from the reputation of solidity. This machine - the Espresso - has three iterations: the Pure (the simple black plastic cheap one), the Color (one color, red, costs more than the Pure evidently because of the color), and the Dose (which can be calibrated to deliver a fixed amount of liquid per button press, which costs even more. The units all have the same mechanicals - stainless steel boiler, roughly 3.5 ounces in size, a brass coated brewing group, and (note well) a non-pressurized 58mm "commercial" portafilter.

Right out of the box, the Espresso feels cheap and flimsy. No metal in sight, and the machine (in my case the Dose) looks like a big ugly hunk of plastic. The steam control knob feels like a child's toy and is so poorly mounted on its stem that it feels like you could twist it off. The water reservoir is a skimpy 42 ounces, and the alleged warming plate is ugly white plastic and produces markedly little warmth. This by far is the ugliest appliance in my kitchen and is also among the most expensive. Most importantly, the machine weighs only 10 pounds, which makes tightening the portafilter a chore as you have to pin the machine down to keep it from tipping over or just being shoved around the counter.

The mechanicals inside appear to be solid, and the portafilter is sturdy and serviceable. The boiler appears willing enough, though it is really tiny, and the steaming wand is excellent. The dosing function on my Dose model appears mainly useless, as my brewing results worked better with manual operation, and this pointless features adds about $50 to the price of the base model. Eyeball your cup's fluid level and save $50. No three way valve, but the filter puck is reasonably dry and easily emptied.

Now the real problem - if you plan to use your own beans for this, you need a $300 grinder from Gaggia. That's it, end of story. My $90 Capresso Infinity after much experimentation with tamping and grind proved incapable of making anything other than sludge due to the non-pressurized portafilter. I called the vendor up and their service staff informed me (in a sympathetic and polite manner) that the Infinity simply couldn't produce a consistent fine grind. Even the popular Baratzas (in the $100-$200 range) can't produce a "Gaggia grind" without being disassembled and modified by the user. (This is true - check the Baratza website FAQs). Upshot: nothing less than a $300 grinder can produce home ground coffee for this machine.

The vendor told me to try pre-ground espresso, and sure enough the commercially ground coffee I tried was much much better, but this means dealing with a short lifespan and keeping the coffee in an airtight container in the freezer. Even after trying that, I found that the pre-ground produced nice crema only when very fresh, like 1-2 days, and generally not after it came out of the freezer. If you don't mind running off to a local store for a small dose of commercially ground coffee every day, this is your machine. Or you can buy a grinder that costs as much or more than your Gaggia machine does.

Anyway, the disappointment for me here was not necessarily that the machine has such extensive "special needs". If it was elegant and solidly made, I would still give it a pass, though maybe not for me personally as buying $600 worth of home espresso equipment is beyond my budget. However, even if we factor out the demanding grind requirement, the flimsiness of this machine and its ugly plastic frame simply is unacceptable at the $250-$300 price point. A Saeco Aroma in the same price range is made of metal, has a bigger steel boiler, weighs 30% more, and uses a pressurized portafilter that works nicely with less finely ground coffee.

The Gaggia has a better reputation for durability, but the new Gaggia Espressos look like they are made on the same assembly lines as Saeco's (the companies are commonly held) with the main difference being the portafilters, so I have little reason to assume that this cheap plastic eyesore will prove any more durable than a comparable Saeco. The Aroma is much easier to use, does not need a grinder that costs as much as it does, IMO is more attractive, and is at the same price point. I don't know why anyone would buy one of these Gaggias. Maybe if you have an expensive grinder, and your old espresso machine died, and you need a cheap replacement? Whatever. I am underwhelmed.

"Does not make coffee" 2009-03-22

This snazzy-looking espresso machine had our hopes up. As coffee roasters and coffee students we liked previous reviewers who talked this machine up. The first brewing attempt produced a bland drink with no crema as promised by Whole Latte Love. I then spent an afternoon adjusting variables. Our coffee is one day after roasting with a fine grind by Rocky Rancilio which cost more than the Gaggia Color. Eventually I took the temperature of the water exiting the brew head. 160 Fahrenheit. Water this cool can't make coffee by any method. Long conversations with Whole latte Love had them admitting that we knew more about coffee than them. Promises of full refund did not pan out although we did force them into issuing a return shipping label.

We are amazed that a reputable company like Gaggia can desgn a technically deficient machine like this. We would not deal with Whole Latte Love again although they are not necessarily an intentionally bad organization.

"great coffee" 2003-10-14

overall i absolutely love the coffee, but the machine is somewhat high maintenance. The thermostat burnt out a month after i bought it, and it took Saeco 6 weeks to repair it. It worked well for almost two years after that, and it looks like the thermostat died on me again. I'm sending it to local authorized repair place but i have no idea how much it'll cost.

Overall- maintenance is time-consuming and expensive but the coffee is wonderful.

However, a $750 coffeemaker should not break at least once a year.

update 2 years later: the second repair was almost $200- the thermostat burnt out. This time it was out of pocket since it was nounder warranty. It worked for 4 months after that- and lo and behold, the thermotat went again. I ended up trashing the machine and getting a new one. What can i say, i love the coffee :)

I've had the new one for a year, and the LED display is starting to burn out. If this one dies i'm going to try Jura Capresso.

I was lucky enough to have a [money] gift certificate just before Valentine's Day, so I thought this would make the perfect gift for my espresso-loving wife. We unpacked it and placed it on the counter and plugged it in. The water container was filled with nearly 60 ounces of good bottled cajun water, and part of one of the two bags of supplied beans was placed in the hopper (about 3/4 of a pound fit). Then we turned it on and lo and behold, the LCD said "Dregdraw, Miss." Naturally, we were stumped, 'cause that's not what the included VCR tape or booklet said we'd see. Being in Louisiana, we thought it referred to a town in neighboring Mississippi; not exactly. Checking through the trouble shooting section of the convenient 5 language manual, I found it means the little drawer on the side that holds the discarded grounds (dregs?) was not firmly in place. A little tug on it and the LCD said it was ready to go! We selected a large cup (American) and pressed the button; the grinder whirred and mechanical things happened and in 30 seconds we had a fresh cup of coffee. It was a little too weak for our chicory-loving selves, so we dialed up the brew strength and selected a medium (Espresso) and it was much more to our liking. We then placed some cream in the pitcher and pressed the froth button; in another 30 seconds we had frothed cream to spare. The coffee was delicious and once you've read the manual, it's pretty simple and fully automatic. Cleaning is definitely made simple by its modular design & several self-cleaning features. It looks very good (I'd have said great were it stainless instead of medium grade plastic) and it feels pretty well made. It is going to get a lot of use I'm sure, as one button pressed at your leisure will get you a steaming cup of your favorite brew in no time flat...

UPDATE: This is the ONE thing my ex (now divorced almost 6 years) and I fought over in our divorce back in 2003. Such a Seattle thing - fighting in a divorce over a superb coffee machine! BTW, he got it, I lost it. :-(

This is, by far, the most wonderful coffee maker I've ever invested in. It does regular european style coffee, is fully adjustable to amount of coffee dispensed, and truly does taste like the coffee I used to get in cafes in Germany. Be very careful when using the steamer nozzle - if you turn it up too high, the cover'll pop right off into whatever you're steaming (from all the pressure).

I don't know if this is a burr grinder or not. All I know is I pour in the beans, put in the water, let it cycle through a rinse (does this automatically when you turn it on), then have it fix my coffee.

I ordered this machine for our office last year. Considering the hight price, I thought the machine would make good coffee. I was wrong. Coffee is half-water. There is very little foam. We use Illy coffee, so I don't think that the type of coffee is the problem. I used cheaper, plastic espresso machines in the past that produced much better coffee. I asked a professional barman to check the machine and he couldn't believe how come this machine produced so bad coffee. He said that the pressure might be too low. Pasquini Livietta isn't worth the price, actually any price.

Recently my La Pavoni broke down after 3 years, so I had to look for another machine. My machine of choice for espresso has always been Cimballi, but I was not impressed with any of their machines, which did not require a water line. After some searching and recommendation from a friend I happened upon the Pasquini Livia 90.

As far as espresso machines go, the Pasquini Livia 90 is the best unit that does not require a water line. The water resevoir holds a very large amount of water and the espresso made with this machine is simply amazing.

A good espresso should have a thick layer of creme on top (goldish brown in color) which will hold the sugar poured in to the coffee afloat for a few seconds. The Pasquini Livia 90 was the first machine I've owned to accomplish the feat. I've owned a $700 Krups Fully Automated Machine, used a $3,000 Fully Automated Machine and owned the La Pavoni fully manual machine. However, the Pasquini was the only machine to provide the perfect creme.

The steam produced by the machine will froth milk for any of the popular espresso drinks and the ability to draw hot water from the unit is also a nice touch. Unlike some machines you can leave the unit on for long periods of time without having to worry about burning out the machine.

Machine is significantly overpriced for build quality. Weighting is incorrect, i.e. the unit is not balanced properly. When you "pump" the espresso the machine wants to tip over. The frother position and function is subpar.

However, it did make the espresso well! Nice crema and surprisingly easy to use given the concerns people give you re: using a pump machine.

We had a bit smaller version of this for years and LOVED it!! This one looks prettier but it is harder to use. We always steamed milk right in our mug before but with this one it is almost impossible to do because it immediately foams over and makes a huge mess. It does not adjust to steam/froth so you just get froth! It drives me crazy! I would rather have the other Capresso that is a bit smaller but worked great. If you never steam milk I suppose the espresso part works fine. I don't like it :(

I've had the machine a little over a year and it makes great lattes really quickly and easily. A few months ago I had a problem with the machine steamer and returned it to Whole Latte Love where I had purchased it and the shipping was $75. The repair was free, however, after about a month, the same problem reoccurred. A phone call to Whole Latte Love was pretty worthless as their repairs are only warranted for 30 days. I'm now going to spend some money locally to get it fixed (hopefully).

My advice would be to pay a little more and buy locally where you can get it serviced. Not only does the repair service at Whole Latte Love leave a lot to be desired, their warranty policy is a joke. I would not recommend purchasing from them unless you live close enough to ship cheaply, but this machine makes GREAT LATTES.

"One terrible machine" 2008-11-06

I got hooked to the lattes at work (company bought us a Capresso espresso machine 3 years ago), and so I wanted to have one at home too so that I and my daughter can enjoy the lattes at home too). So, I researched lot of sites on internet, especially the Amazon, read the glowing reviews about the Saeco Incanto machine and decided to get that one. I researched a little more and found that Digital Kitchen store in Sammamish, WA was offering a $100 discount and a 2 year warranty, and placed an order with them (May 2007). A few days later, I received the unit from Cafe west distributing in Medford, Oregon.

The machine was a little complicated but I figured out the operation in a few days (the user manual was not very well written). It worked OK for a few months, and then started acting up (steam would not come out continuously, comes out in bursts), had to drain the coffee dredges tray almost every time, and then finally coffee stopped coming out in february '08(I was descaling the machine regularly and the descaling light never came on). So I called their repair service called 'Empire fulfilment' and they asked me to send the machine. After one month, I got the machine back and it worked OK for about 2 months, and then (July '08) the steam started escaping from the steam knob and the knob was getting very hot. After a few more days, the machine completely stopped working, would not even turn on. I called Empire Fulfilment again and they asked me to send the machine which I dutifully did. After about one month, I got the machine back (from the repair statement, I found that it was a major repair, they had to replace several parts including the control board).

This time the machine worked exactly for one month, and now water comes out of the steam wand when it is dispensing coffee. That is making the coffee weak. And after steaming the milk, the steam would not stop after closing the steam knob. The steam keeps coming. I am pretty sure this is going to lead into a major problem again. I sent a e-mail to Empire fulfilment and am waiting for their return authorization so that I can send the machine to them again.

I don't know if all those people that gave the 4 or 5 star reviews are still happy with this machine, but for sure I am not. It is ridiculous that I spent $800 for this machine and not able to enjoy the coffee for any length of time. We have the Capresso espresso machine in our office for 3 years now, and about 20 people use it every day, and we never had any problem so far, and I buy this Saeco Incanto machine for my home use, and may be use 3 cups of coffee max per day, and it keeps breaking down. I still have 6 or 7 months of warranty left, and once the warranty runs out, there is no point in getting the machine repaired if it has problem after that.

What I can't figure out is, so many people gave it 4 or 5 stars to this machine and I am having such a bad experience. Are all those people lucky and I am not? Did I get a lemon? Do I have any recourse from the manufacturer? Please send me some comments if you can help me. I shelled out $800, for some people it may not be very significant amount but for me it is a lot of money. I don't know how I decided to doll out that kind of money for a coffee machine, but here I am.

I would greatly appreciate if you send me some suggestions.

I bought this Incanto a few months ago. I ended up choosing a Saeco for my kitchen because I was pleased with the performance of the Saeco Professional Royal we use in another building. The Incanto has made a good espresso and Caffe Americano -- I am satisfied with both of these. I also make cappucinos. Cappucino making is why I would give the Incanto a 4 and not a 5. The steam apparatus is what they call a panarello. This device allows more people without experience to make an adequate foamed milk. On my Royal, the steam device is the thin tube similar to what a barista would use in an espresso shop. You can get superb steamed foam this way, but it probably takes longer for most people to learn how to use. The other thing I have learned is the quality of your product really relies on a quality coffee bean that you enjoy -- experiment for roast, taste and flavor. The Incanto is aesthetically designed, and I do not find it too large to enjoy its presence on my kitchen counter.

I bought this machine as a christmas present for my parents a little over a year ago, and they love it! It's very well designed, easy to use, easy to clean, and makes wonderful coffee.

The compact design is perfect to save space in small kitchens, but if you are not space-constrained you should consider the Vienna model (or, if you are a cappuccino drinker, the Vienna Deluxe) which are considerably cheaper and offer the same features and reliability in a slightly larger package.

You can't go wrong with Saeco!

"Not bad, but problematic" 2008-11-25

I had the Krups xp4030 for about a year and a half. The machine worked fine for several months, but then began to have issues. The number one issue was the gasket on the steam head. This gasket would wear from taking the handle assembly on and off. Eventually, it began to leak, causing hot water and ground espresso to shoot everywhere.

Replacing the gasket was a chore, simply because it took three weeks to get a new one. In the meantime, I used a small piece of wire to elevate the cup from the handle portion, causing a better seal. This is actually the only way this unit worked properly the whole time I had it.

I replaced the gasket twice in a year and a half. The other problem I had was partially of my own doing. The cups the espresso go in would clog up and were very difficult to clean. I finally ended up replacing one of them.

The final step was when the unit began to short out. From repeated water leaks and gasket issues, the control wiring had become wet and corroded. There is no easy way to open the unit and clean the wiring, necessitating a return of the item to the manufacturer. As the product was out of warranty service, I simply threw it away and started going to the coffee shop again.

I was pretty dissatisfied by this product and will not buy another Krups product in the future.

"Jura-Capresso Impressa J5 - Outstanding Performance and Quality!" 2008-12-23

At this writing I've owned the J5 for two weeks and have produced approximately 100 shots of espresso/coffee. Having stated that as a qualifier, I've found this super automatic espresso machine to be outstanding in performance, ease of use, and quality of espresso produced. The controls are simple to understand and use - there are detailed descriptions of these available on multiple vendor websites, the manufacturer's website even includes a number of very informative videos.

Considering the financial commitment associated with this machine, I was more than a little hopeful that it would produce quality espresso in a straight forward and timely manner. It does this with aplomb.

Regarding its operation, the J5 heats quickly (around 60 seconds) then is ready to run the rinse cycle (also quick, at around 10 seconds). Once the rinse cycle has completed it's ready for action. I won't go into detail about the individual espresso/coffee settings (again, this info is readily available elsewhere) other than to say the controls work exactly as described. Each button is customizable, both permanently and as a one-time override. A very wide range of volume and strength is attainable by adjusting these controls.

The morning routine:

I was quite concerned about the total end-to-end time for brewing in the morning before work, and I have to say in this regard I am very pleased. I've configured the J5 to automatically turn on as I'm showering/shaving etc, so when I arrive in front of the machine it's ready to run the rinse cycle. If you're interested in ensuring the warmest possible espresso/coffee, I recommend running an additional rinse cycle to heat up the internal components a bit more, this combined with preheating your cup really produces a nice hot cup. In the mornings I brew 8 oz. of café crema. The whole process, including a rinse cycle after brewing (the machine prompts for this after hitting the on/off button), takes about 3-4 minutes. This time would be cut by at least half if you were brewing the standard 1-2 oz espresso instead of the higher volume café crema. If you're interested in immediate cleanup, the drip tray and dreg box are easily removed and rinsed - both will hold a substantial volume however, so daily cleaning of these items is not required.

A word on espresso quality:

Okay, after covering some of the operational highlights, here's the real question - of what quality is the espresso/coffee produced? The short answer is...OUTSTANDING! Producing quality espresso consistently is where the J5 really excels. I've used two types of espresso so far, Lavazza Pienaroma and the Organic Espresso available from CoffeeAM.com. The espresso shots produced using both of these beans results in an amazing amount of crema (1/4 inch) and a fantastic taste. I've also used a locally available pre-ground decaf espresso in the by-pass doser with good results. It's difficult to describe a quality taste in a written review, but the espresso shots produced by the J5 are simply outstanding.

It's difficult to continue enthusiastically describing features of this machine without sounding like a shill for the manufacturer...but a few more things are worthy of mention:

* I've used the frothXpress attachment for making cappuccinos and lattes a handful of times and it works well, much better than I expected, and is easy to clean. I have not used the optional Dual Frother Plus. The hot water is nice and hot, and works extremely well when used as a cup warming aid.

* I've had no issues with the conical burr grinder or any of the other brewing components. They work well and operate within very acceptable sound levels.

* Commenting specifically on the espresso/coffee temperature, I can say that while using the "hot" setting, a rinse cycle to heat up the internal components, and preheating the cup with hot water, the output is very acceptable - no need to be hotter.

* Brew duration seems to be heavily effected by the grind setting. For example, a fine setting using dark oily beans induces very slow brew times. If these types of beans are used, a grind setting between medium and coarse seems to work best; this produces a great crema and normal brew duration. Oily beans should also be "air dried" for 4-5 hours before adding to the hopper to allow the excess oils to dry.

* Included with the J5 is an excellent owner's manual and very handy instructional DVD. Reading/viewing both is highly recommended.

Con?:

For reasons I have yet to determine, both 2 cup buttons brew at the "extra strong" strength setting only. Although I don't consider this a major fault, it seems very odd that the volume setting is configurable and the strength is not.

Finally, as stated above, I've owned this machine for only about two weeks, so I can't yet comment on durability or longevity. However, the build quality and performance so far would seem to portend high marks for both.

When we have already owned or used several Jura Capresso Automatic Coffee Centers, it is difficult to come up with more superlatives. This machine is at or near the top of our experience with many European coffee machines. It grinds fresh coffee beans, tamps automatically either one cup or two cups worth, then brews the coffee to our own taste and measure, then disposes of the used coffee grounds,in less than 30 seconds. From bean to cup espresso, coffee, cappucino, cafe latte, and even makes hot water for tea, faster than a microwave.

What a great Swiss invention. Completely programable and infinitely adjustable for coffee fanatics. Simple enough for the rest of us.

"DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!" 2009-08-11

We were delighted when we purchased this machine. It made fantastic espresso and cappuccino, etc., and was so easy to operate. But about a month after the warranty expired, it stopped working. Despite our careful maintenance, an electronic malfunction occurred and the gears continued to operate and torqued the mechanism out of line. The estimate for repair was $375.00. It's unacceptable to spend this kind of money for an appliance and then to face this kind of repair bill within less than two years. And the people at Gaggia were far from sympathetic. My recommendation is to steer clear of this machine.

"Excellent Espresso and Very Reliable" 2008-12-18

I received this espresso machine for Christmas 2007, and have been extremely pleased with its performance. I've had absolutely no problems....once I learned how to use the machine properly. Note, there are a few websites that offer video tutorials on how to use this machine that are very useful. Note, I use this machine every single day...typically going through 14 shots of espresso (at least) since there are several coffee drinker in our home. We have almost entirely abandoned our previous coffee maker...not because we didn't like it, but because this machine is so wonderful. Here are a few insights:

1. This machine typically makes 12-14 individually ground espresso shots before you will need to empty the hopper. It's pretty easy and no big deal to do this. The grinder works flawlessly, and the hopper typically holds about a 1/2 to 2/3 pound of beans.

2. I have tried to use ground coffee with this machine, which doesn't taste anywhere as good as the beans. When I first got the machine, I tried using some "fine ground" espresso in the little door on top to make a cup of coffee. No espresso would come out the machine....it took a long time to figure out that it was clogging up the filter. I used slightly coarser ground beans with excellent results.

3. There are two buttons for making espresso - I refer to them as the regular and large size buttons. You can adjust how much water each button will automatically dispense very easily.

4. The steam attachment on the side of the machine works very well for both steam and dispensing hot water.

5. There is an automatic decalcification light that comes on to let you know to run the appropriate cleanser through the machine. I've figured out this light turns on based upon the number of cycles of espresso that are made versus actual need. No big deal....it's a good reminder light for maintance.

6. The water tank is pretty straight forward and lifts off for filling, although I prefer to lift the top off of it and refilling via a large glass/pitcher.

7. This machine is mostly made of plastic, but it's very solid and well made. The tray beneath the espresso dispenser is made of metal, along with the steamer nozzel.

8. I highly recommend watching one of the instructional videos for this machine. It does require learning very basic steps, which are explained well with the included instructions (they are outright cryptic). This is a very easy machine to use once you understand the controls.

9. If I could add a feature it would be a counter mechanism - because some days I lose track of my caffeine intake and I'm simply curious as to how many shots we've really made in total.

I've made at least 2000 espresso shots with this great machine. Overall, myself, my family, and my friends have all enjoyed it...and everyone wants one. I've converted many diehard regular coffee drinkers to more flavorful espresso. You decide....this machine isn't cheap. But some luxuries are wonderful if you can afford it.

We had to replace our Saeco Super Automatic after 4.5 years of constant use. It finally wore out. We were happy with it, but wanted our next machine to have additional features. The Gaggia 9004 Syncrony Compact attracted us because it has a smaller footprint and has a single shot doser to allow us to brew other coffees (pre-ground) in the machine in addition to the beans in the hopper/grinder. My wife likes decaf and I like a jolt in the morning. We also liked the fact that this model has a dual boiler instead of a single boiler (one for coffee, one for steam) to make steaming your lattes faster and easier. The digital controls give you extensive control over how your coffee is brewed. You can control temperature, quantity of beans, quantity of coffee dispensed and adjust for water hardness. You can dispense three types of coffee, espresso, normal coffee, & Café Lungo (espresso with extra water added, similar to Café Americano) with a single button press. Press the button twice, and you get a double shot. What has surprised me about the machine is the grinding process is MUCH quieter than our previous Super Automatic. The tamping process produces the same rather loud "clacks" as other super automatics, but the grinder is much quieter and smoother sounding. What are the downsides to this machine? The smaller footprint means a smaller bean hopper and a smaller water reservoir. Not a big deal for us. I wish there had been a better design for the hopper that holds the used coffee grounds after brewing. You have to remove the drip tray to remove the hopper. Seems like an unnecessary extra step. I'll update my review later with comments about durability, since we haven't had it long enough to comment. However, other reviewers give it good marks.

"Exceedingly convenient" 2008-01-26

I ordered this product after having a store demo. The coffee (Ristretto) brought back a flood of memories from a time when I worked in Europe, as only smells and tastes can. The coffee couldn't be simpler to make, the machine is easy to use and maintain.

I ordered midnight blue. The midnight blue is not as blue as it appears in the picture; it is more navy blue. I certainly wouldn't go to extremes to get blue over black - it's not that different.

Okay, so you don't have a lot of flexibility with this product - you are locked into the Nespresso capsules which you have to order directly from Nespresso. I ordered the welcome package of 200 capsules which includes all 12 varieties, and so far I like them all. It is a huge improvement over the Senseo, which IMHO makes lousy coffee, and is consistent and reliable to use - no spewing leaks, etc. But if you are a purist you will probably be put off by the limitations of having to use the proprietary capsules. If you want fast, convenient and reliable espresso and aren't too worried about your recurring cost (50 cents per cup) then you will love this.

Be warned, it only takes short cups. So if you like to make big lattes, you will be transferring to a larger cup unless you want to use a European latte bowl.

Set-up of this thing is pretty confusing with a horribly written manual.

I'm not sure if we ever got it running properly. Very slow and you'll have to hit the one cup button many times before youo get a dinkable amount of liquid in your espesso cup.

After one month it stopped working. We have called the number in the manual many times with no response. It seems we're resigned to try finding a repair shop. However,I'm not confident that we can find one for this.

"Ugly, Shoddy, Demanding Appliance Seeks Mate" 2009-04-17

Gaggia has a reputation for building relatively solid though finicky espresso makers. This machine is one of the new generation of Gaggias, which evidently are attempting to retreat from the reputation of solidity. This machine - the Espresso - has three iterations: the Pure (the simple black plastic cheap one), the Color (one color, red, costs more than the Pure evidently because of the color), and the Dose (which can be calibrated to deliver a fixed amount of liquid per button press, which costs even more. The units all have the same mechanicals - stainless steel boiler, roughly 3.5 ounces in size, a brass coated brewing group, and (note well) a non-pressurized 58mm "commercial" portafilter.

Right out of the box, the Espresso feels cheap and flimsy. No metal in sight, and the machine (in my case the Dose) looks like a big ugly hunk of plastic. The steam control knob feels like a child's toy and is so poorly mounted on its stem that it feels like you could twist it off. The water reservoir is a skimpy 42 ounces, and the alleged warming plate is ugly white plastic and produces markedly little warmth. This by far is the ugliest appliance in my kitchen and is also among the most expensive. Most importantly, the machine weighs only 10 pounds, which makes tightening the portafilter a chore as you have to pin the machine down to keep it from tipping over or just being shoved around the counter.

The mechanicals inside appear to be solid, and the portafilter is sturdy and serviceable. The boiler appears willing enough, though it is really tiny, and the steaming wand is excellent. The dosing function on my Dose model appears mainly useless, as my brewing results worked better with manual operation, and this pointless features adds about $50 to the price of the base model. Eyeball your cup's fluid level and save $50. No three way valve, but the filter puck is reasonably dry and easily emptied.

Now the real problem - if you plan to use your own beans for this, you need a $300 grinder from Gaggia. That's it, end of story. My $90 Capresso Infinity after much experimentation with tamping and grind proved incapable of making anything other than sludge due to the non-pressurized portafilter. I called the vendor up and their service staff informed me (in a sympathetic and polite manner) that the Infinity simply couldn't produce a consistent fine grind. Even the popular Baratzas (in the $100-$200 range) can't produce a "Gaggia grind" without being disassembled and modified by the user. (This is true - check the Baratza website FAQs). Upshot: nothing less than a $300 grinder can produce home ground coffee for this machine.

The vendor told me to try pre-ground espresso, and sure enough the commercially ground coffee I tried was much much better, but this means dealing with a short lifespan and keeping the coffee in an airtight container in the freezer. Even after trying that, I found that the pre-ground produced nice crema only when very fresh, like 1-2 days, and generally not after it came out of the freezer. If you don't mind running off to a local store for a small dose of commercially ground coffee every day, this is your machine. Or you can buy a grinder that costs as much or more than your Gaggia machine does.

Anyway, the disappointment for me here was not necessarily that the machine has such extensive "special needs". If it was elegant and solidly made, I would still give it a pass, though maybe not for me personally as buying $600 worth of home espresso equipment is beyond my budget. However, even if we factor out the demanding grind requirement, the flimsiness of this machine and its ugly plastic frame simply is unacceptable at the $250-$300 price point. A Saeco Aroma in the same price range is made of metal, has a bigger steel boiler, weighs 30% more, and uses a pressurized portafilter that works nicely with less finely ground coffee.

The Gaggia has a better reputation for durability, but the new Gaggia Espressos look like they are made on the same assembly lines as Saeco's (the companies are commonly held) with the main difference being the portafilters, so I have little reason to assume that this cheap plastic eyesore will prove any more durable than a comparable Saeco. The Aroma is much easier to use, does not need a grinder that costs as much as it does, IMO is more attractive, and is at the same price point. I don't know why anyone would buy one of these Gaggias. Maybe if you have an expensive grinder, and your old espresso machine died, and you need a cheap replacement? Whatever. I am underwhelmed.

I bought this machine from Wholelattelove and am very dissapointed. It failed after 30 days. It started pumping spontaneously, pumped itself dry and then quit pumping. So far its taken Wholelattelove 2 months to repair it and I still dont have it.

Its a lightweight flimsy machine, with some odd quirks. Why is the on/off switch in the back where you cant reach it. The water reservoir leaks, and steamer fell off.

I dont recommend the machine or Wholelattelove.com They dont respond to emails, and dont seem to care about customer service.

I purchased this from Amazon in January and found it makes great espresso for a relatively small and light weight machine. I also have a Sirena which is much sturdier and more expensive but I think that the Gaggia makes a better espresso. I initially gave this product a lower rating because the lights failed to operate after a few uses and I was frustrated because it wasn't clear how to trouble shoot the machine from the Gaggia website. Thanks to Google, I found the customer support number in the US. They called me back promptly and were very helpful. They were able to resolve the problem with me over the phone with a simple screwdriver in about 5 minutes. They actually knew a lot about the machine and I didn't need to send it back and wait 5 weeks! Despite the issue with the lights, I think the machine has been well worth it.

"Wonderful coffee maker" 2009-02-15

This is the only super auto espresso machine I have had. It's been running daily for four years and six weeks without a hitch. I'm estimating just at 6,000 cups of coffee. The water container holds 64 ounces, with a large removable lid, easy to fill from the top. The container also lifts right up and off the machine. The bean hopper has the same large lid and holds close to a pound of beans I estimate. The floor of the bean hopper has fairly shallow sloping sides and if you use very oily beans, they can fail to slide into the grinder. It's no problem to just push them on down. There is a little plastic cover over the burr grinder to prevent beans from flying up, I removed it to allow me to push the oily beans down. You need a little Torx bit. The four controls are dead simple: There is a rotary knob to vary the amount of coffee you make. I believe the amount of grinds is the same no matter the cup size you select. Select a small cup size and you get espresso, select a larger cup size for coffee. There is a brew button; hit it once for one cup or twice in quick succession, it will grind twice the amount of coffee, and make two cups. There is a steam button, tap it to get steam. There is a steam/ hot water valve. Open it to get hot water for tea or soup, or if you pressed the steam button, steam for frothing. And boy does this thing make great coffee crema! It will absolutely ruin you for any coffee you get "on the outside." The spout has two openings, you can put one or two cups under it. It slides up and down but not too high, you can't fit really large mugs under there unless you tip them a little sideways. If you thought you could put a really large mug under the spout by removing the drip tray, you can't. The machine won't brew with the drip tray removed, there is a safety switch or interlock. It's not a big issue, just use a mug that fits! The machine has a rotary base so you can swivel it around. You need to do a little maintenance now and then, take out the brew group and rinse it real well, and decalcify periodically. My sister ruined hers by not decalcifying, she uses rock hard San Antonio water. I use well water from a limestone aquifer, and run it through a water softener. The sodium doesn't bother me or this machine! Empty out the drip tray every day, takes about thirty seconds. The used puck holder holds at least 12 pucks I would guess. I empty it daily no matter what, just because I don't like the smell of used coffee grinds wafting around the kitchen. As far as the steam frothing wand , I can't comment because I don't use it. I just drink coffee and espresso. The crema on both is excellent. When I bought this it seemed really expensive at $575, but I see that it is truly a bargain compared to the price of so many other Jura, Delonghi, Saeco and others. Of course the price is no longer $575, but still it is less expensive than many. It's all plastic, if you are concerned with that aesthetic, but the coffee quality is superb. I wouldn't buy any other brand other than just out of curiousity! The thing has never failed and makes great tasting coffee and espresso.

The touch screen offers an abundance of programmable options. The Beverage Settings allow you to set the strength, intensity, temperature and volume for your espresso, coffee, and tall coffee. The Time/Date Settings allow you to adjust stand-by mode and also set the machine to turn on and off up to 3 times a day, 7 days a week. For example, Monday -- 6am, 12pm, 6pm, Friday -- 6am, 1pm, 9pm and Saturday -- 9am, 6pm, 10pm. Machine Settings allow you to set the language, adjust the cup warmer, and set the water settings including rinse mode, water filter and water hardness. Maintenance Settings include cleaning and descale cycles and lock display, which allows you to clean the menu screen without accidentally selecting a beverage. Lastly, Special Settings include factory settings, which allow you to reset the machine to the original manufacturer settings. All super automatic machines have a centralized brew group where the brewing process takes place.
